Master of Arts in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program provides those completing the degree with Michigan secondary school certification plus a graduate level degree. The program is designed for people who have completed the bachelor's degree outside of the field of education. Students entering the MAT program are often employed outside the field and pursuing career a change involving teaching. Such students bring valuable experience and expertise to assist in exploring the practice of teaching through thinking about goals, values, beliefs, and assumptions about teaching, and will consider schools in broad social, political, and historical contexts.

Except for the student teaching phase during the last semester, course work in the MAT program is generally offered weekdays in the late afternoon and evening hours or on Saturdays, enabling students to earn the degree through part-time study while continuing to work. Flexibility in the sequencing of the 36-credit degree's coursework plus the six years that admitted students are allowed for degree completion contribute to this degree's responsiveness to the needs of the post-baccalaureate student seeking certification with the attainment of a master's degree.
