Local Government Management Initiative

Proposed Program

Preparing Leaders for Local Governments,
Contributing to the Solution of Community Problems

This proposed program involves the Michigan Municipal League and the Michigan Local Government Management Association in partnership with the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Graduate Program in Public Administration. The proposed program  includes 14 graduate-level online courses for professionals working in local government – villages, towns, cities or counties. Currently the courses are being reviewed at UM-D. These courses are aligned with the International City Management Association’s core competencies used in their Voluntary Credentialing Program.

All courses are being developed by teams of local government professionals and university faculty.  Pending approval, we anticipate the first cluster of graduate courses will be in the fall 2007 and winter 2008.  Pending University approval, the complete suite of local government courses will be available summer 2008.

The Local Government Management Initiative courses will be offered in several formats; all on line,  “hybrid” seminars involving both online course work and limited face-to-face sessions such as “weekenders” or evening sessions around the state of Michigan and face-to-face seminars in a variety of times and locations, such as evenings, weekends, at the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Fairlane Center, or in other locations throughout the state. 


All courses successfully completed may be used in as partial fulfillment of requirements for a Local Government Management Certificate and / or a Master in Public Administration (MPA) degree at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The certificate and MPA in Local Government Management are under development and require University Approvals.
