Labor Relations (CBA 107)                    August 7th ($80)

6:00 - 9:00 pm. (Light Dinner @ 5:30 p.m.)

This class explores the laws and language of labor relations and public schools.  Topics include the Public Employment Relations Act and the Michigan Employment Relations Commission.

Course Objectives:

When you complete this course, you will be able to

  • identify major laws and regulations impacting labor relations in public schools
  • explain the primary obligations, restrictions, and opportunities that these laws and regulations create for school districts and school boards
  • identify the major steps in the collective bargaining process
  • discuss the major subjects that are included and excluded from collective bargaining
  • explain the role of the Michigan Employment Relations Commission as it pertains to school districts
  • discuss the role of school boards in dealing with labor issues in school districts
  • define common terms related to labor relations
