Student Teaching Scholarship Fund

Did you know that 50% of the students in the School of Education take four or more classes AND work more than 20 hours per week?  Moreover, many of these students also have significant family responsibilities. It is a testament to them that they have been able to balance their school, work and family times.  That said, these forces collide during their student teaching semester when they are required to teach full-time and prepare for that teaching. Those of us who have experienced student teaching know that we are talking about 50-60 hour weeks leaving precious little time for work, let alone family.

Now, more than ever, many of these students need our financial help.  A student recently contacted me regarding financial aid.  He is student teaching, has a family and is “only” able to work 15 hours a week at a local fast food establishment.  He couldn’t pay his tuition.  His loans and credit cards were maxed out and he had to pay rent.  I know this young man and I believe that he will be an excellent teacher and a credit to our profession and to the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

The School of Education has initiated a scholarship for those students-in-need during their student teaching semester.  It will be based primarily on need and academic standing. Please consider contributing a tax-deductable (both State and Federal) donation to University of Michigan-Dearborn, School of Education Student Teaching Scholarship Fund.  We would like to begin helping our students tomorrow.
