Civility:  A Tool for Conflict Management (CBA 294)                

6:00 - 9:00 pm. (Light Dinner @ 5:30 p.m.)

As an elected official, you are confronted by problems on a regular basis.  Many of those problems result from, or create conflicts between, competing interests.  How you deal with disagreements among these competing interests defines your commitment to civility.  As central figures in addressing conflicts, elected officials have a unique opportunity and obligation to model civil behavior for their governing body and their community as a whole.  Through this seminar, you will learn strategies on how to manage conflict in a way that fosters an environment of openness, honesty, and respect.

Course Objectives:

When you complete this course, you will be able to

  • Articulate options for creating & maintaining a respectful environment.
  • Identify best practices, strategies, tools & resources to help ensure that conflict is managed effectively.
  • Explain methods to model civility & avoid pitfalls.
  • Identify an area for improvement and with the group’s input, develop appropriate strategies for success.
  • Discuss the role that each member of the Board Leadership Team plays in managing conflict & promoting civility.
