How will it hit us?: The Impact of Michigan's Fiscal Crisis on Municipalities and School Districts

6:00 - 9:00 pm. (Light Dinner @ 5:30 p.m.)

How will the state’s fiscal crisis impact your community?  What are the implications of the state’s fiscal stress for future years?  Come discuss these issues with fiscal experts from the Citizens Research Council of Michigan as they share the findings from their new report on the current and future challenges of state government finances, with a special emphasis on how these challenges will impact municipalities and school districts.

Course Objectives:

When you complete this course, you will be able to

  • Define the major causes of the state’s fiscal crisis
  • Detail how the state’s recent revenue trends have impacted municipal and school finance
  • Identify trends in state revenue that are likely to have a significant impact on school district and municipal budgets in the coming years
  • Understand projected shortfalls in revenue sources for municipal and school finance
  • Discuss issues that you can address to prepare your community to deal with future revenue constraints
  • Describe options that are being considered at the state level to address both the revenue and cost sides of the state budget
  • Explain how the options for addressing future state funding gaps may impact your school district or municipality
