Fundamentals of Municipal Organization February 21st ($70)
6:00 - 9:00 pm. (Light Dinner @ 5:30 p.m.)
All elected municipal officials must have a basic foundation of knowledge upon which to build their effectiveness as community leaders. This course is the first of four that cover the fundamentals of local government. What is a city or village, and what does it do? The answers to these questions are more complicated than you might think. Cities, villages, and other local governments each have a specific set of responsibilities and powers that are determined by federal and state law, local charters, court decisions, and other legal frameworks. As an elected official, it is essential for you to understand what your community and your elected bodies can and can’t do as you attempt to serve the needs of your constituents. This course will help you gain this understanding. This course is a required course for elected officials who want to earn the Level One Education Award from Michigan Municipal League’s Elected Officials Academy.
Course Objectives:
When you complete this course, you will be able to - Differentiate between the role of the legislative and executive branches of local government
- Identify the primary laws, court decisions, etc. that compose the legal framework for municipal government
- Discuss the main obligations and restrictions imposed upon municipal governments by their legal framework
- Explore these concepts in greater depth through future seminars and training
