Introduction to School Board Service (CBA 101).              February 2nd 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. ($170)

In this foundational course, MASB instructors will cover everything you need to know to about Basic Board Governance.  Topics include roles and responsibilities, vision and leadership, healthy teams and trust, the Open Meetings Act and other key Michigan statutes, effective meetings and parliamentary procedure, communication, and decision making.  (Includes Becoming a Better Board Member, NSBA book.)

Course Objectives:

When you complete this course, you will be able to

  • discuss the basic roles/responsibilities of school board members
  • distinguish between the role of the school board and the role of the school district administrators
  • understand the importance of vision and leadership to effective school board functioning
  • explain the role of parliamentary procedure and properly use basic parliamentary procedure in meetings
  • describe how the Open Meetings Act and other major laws affect board meetings and operations
  • understand the importance of effective communication and structured decisionmaking and follow practices that support each of these.
