Admission Requirements

Applicants (for either Track I or II) must submit evidence of each of the following to the Graduate Coordinator of the School of Education.

  • A baccalaureate degree and a teaching certificate
  • A 3.0 (B) undergraduate grade point average or better. Individuals whose grade point is less than 3.0 may be considered for probationary admission status and may be required to submit evidence of potential for success in a graduate program.
  • An official transcript from college/university granting the undergraduate degree and one from each university or college attended.
  • Track I: Evidence of passing the science section of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) at the elementary level. If individuals have not passed the test, they will be provisionally admitted and will be required to successfully complete the appropriate NSCI 231, 232, or 233 courses. Track II: Evidence of passing the appropriate science section of the MTTC for their BA or BS degree or evidence of passing the (general) science section of the MTTC at the secondary level.
  • Three recommendations from supervisors or university faculty
  • A one-page statement of their philosophy of teaching science
  • A one-page statement of educational and career goals

Students admitted provisionally to Track I because they have not passed the science section of the MTTC have one year to satisfy the deficiency by successfully completing the science components of the MTTC. During the provisional year they may take a limited selection of graduate MS/SE courses.
