TEACHER CERTIFICATION

In addition to the 36 credits required for the MAT degree, all secondary teachers in Michigan must be approved by the state through the completion of an endorsement in a major and a minor teaching field. This requires satisfactorily completion of appropriate coursework in the teaching major and minor areas as defined by the Michigan Department of Education in conjunction with the UM-D School of Education. Typically, students wishing to enter the MAT program have completed much but not all of the coursework required in a targeted teaching major or minor. Applicants may submit a Transcript(s) Evaluation Request Form to the School of Education's Records Office for a determination of the coursework needed to completion of the teaching major and minor fields. Students are permitted to complete course requirements for the teaching major and minor at any accredited American postsecondary institution.

State endorsement also requires passage of the Michigan Tests for Teacher Certification (MTTC)--both the "Basic Skills" portion and the subject area tests in the student's teaching major(s) and teaching minor(s). Students may complete needed classes in their teaching major and minor and work toward passage of the MTTC requirements during a "pre-MAT" phase. Students allowed to enter as pre-MAT with the permission of the program coordinator are allowed to progress with a limited number of graduate courses in the MAT while working. If you wish entry as a pre-MAT student, contact the School of Education's Graduate Records Office at 313-593-5091 to arrange an intake interview with the program coordinator.
