To be eligible for student teaching, students must complete an application and attend a mandatory application meeting. Application meetings for Fall student teaching will be January. Application meetings for Winter student teaching will be March. Failing to attend an application meeting could result in waiting until the next application period. Announcements for the application meetings will be posted throughout the Education Departments and on the Field Placement website. Students should regularly check the Education bulletin boards or call the Field Placement Office at 313-593-5094 for specific dates and times.
Prospective student teachers must be of good moral character, have suitable personality traits and aptitude for teaching, and possess good physical and mental health. The Michigan Teacher Certification Administrative Rules impose the following conditions on teacher certification:
Rule 101. "The state board may refuse to grant or renew, or may revoke or suspend for a fixed term, or may impose reasonable conditions on, a teaching certificate pursuant to these rules for the following reasons: - Fraud, material misrepresentation, or concealment in the application for a certificate.
- Failure or ineligibility of the applicant or certificate holder to meet the criteria for eligibility for the certificate.
- Conviction, as an adult, of an act of immoral conduct contributing to the delinquency of a child, or a felony involving moral turpitude.
Certificate applicants are required to sign a statement of Moral Turpitude declaring that the conditions stated in Rule 101 do not apply to them.
To be recommended for a teaching certificate, the student must: - Complete degree requirements in a prescribed curriculum in education for the state elementary or secondary provisional certificate.
- Maintain a 2.75 or better overall grade point average (GPA); a 2.75 GPA in education courses and a 2.75 GPA in each major and minor teaching area.
- Pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in Basic Skills prior to admission.
- Candidates for an elementary teaching certificate must pass the Elementary Education examination prior to student teaching and may take appropriate subject area tests if they are seeking additional certification areas. Candidates for secondary teaching certification must pass the appropriate subject area examination for each subject area in which they are to be certified prior to student teaching.
- Earn a satisfactory rating in EDD 301 Directed Teaching in Secondary Schools, EDD304 Seminar: Teaching Secondary Grades or EDD 305 Direct Teaching in Elementary Schools, EDD 307 Seminar: Teaching in Elementary Grades.
Students Wishing to Earn a Master's Degree in Secondary Education (MAT) A student who has completed a bachelor's degree at an approved institution may meet state requirements for teacher certification without earning a second degree. Such students should contact the Graduate Office (313-436-9135) for information concerning a coursework evaluation and for information regarding the Master's of Art in Teaching (MAT) The MAT program is only offered to students going into secondary certification. Students are required to complete a minimum of fifteen (15) weeks of university supervised student teaching as part of the culminating program requirement.
Failure to meet the following clearances could delay your placement. Must be valid throughout practicum and/or student teaching term. TB test may be obtained from current employer, private physician, local health clinic, County Health Dept. TB testing is available at Dearborn Public Health Department. An official form with dates/times of testing and verification of payment by UM-D can be obtained from the Field Placement office, 261FCS.
- CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK (CBC)
Must have both State and FBI clearances. Forms are available in 262 FCS. CBC are offered by Integrated Biometric Technology Services at a variety of locations by appointment only 1-866-226-2952 or www.iisfingerprint.com
- BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES TRAINING
View video and take test at the Curriculum Lab, 313-593-5329, 267 FCS or Education Psychology (EDC300/301) and Child Development classes (EDC 340/341).
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for Adults and Children and First Aid certification must be current and on file in the Field Placement Office. Only American Red Cross or American Heart Association certifications will be accepted.
- EVALUATION OF ORAL EXPRESSION
This is required for student teaching eligibility. Please request a professor in a course where you are making a presentation to assess, your oral expression skills. Forms can be obtained from Field Placement Office, 261 FCS only (MAT Student Teacher - not applicable).
- STUDENT TEACHING STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING
The date will be filled in at the student teaching meeting. Download Statement of Understanding form
