For teachers who possess a K-8 teaching certificate with 14 or fewer credits in science
Graduates of Track I of this program will: - know and be able to use the science content in the Michigan Curriculum Framework so that they can prepare and present inquiry-oriented science (including appropriate use of technology to improve student learning),
- use science as the integrating context for other disciplines; initially the primary emphasis will be on integrating language arts (reading and writing),
- be designers of valid and reliable instruments of assessment, and
- be able to objectively evaluate, use and apply research to improve teaching and learning (including the ability to conduct classroom research).
The 30 credit hours required for the MS/SE degree are divided into four categories:
Content (9 credits) NSCI 531 Learning by Inquiry: Advanced Physical Science NSCI 532 Learning by Inquiry: Advanced Earth and Planetary Science NSCI 533 Learning by Inquiry: Advanced Life Science
Pedagogy (9 credits) EDD 575 Integrating Reading/Writing into Science EDD 685 Advanced Teaching of Science in Elementary and Middle Schools EDT 510 Teaching with Technology
Assessment (9 credits) EDK 500 Introduction to Research in Education EDC 554 Evaluation of Learning EXPS 520 Science Education Action Research Project
Elective courses (3 credits) Any graduate level course in the School of Education or the College of Arts, Sciences and Letters as approved by the MS/SE Program Committee will be accepted.
No course can be taken for pass/fail credit if applied to the MS/SE degree.
